1. Literally, “black father.” According to Cámara Cascudo, the expression “father” (pai) means natural chief, a person with indisputable authority. Thus, one could presume that the pai preto was an important leader in the community.

2. A shortened and popular form of senhor, which means “mister.”

3. The paulista capital is the city of São Paulo, the capital of the state of São Paulo. People from the city of São Paulo are called paulistas, whereas the inhabitants of the state of São Paulo are known as the paulistanos.

4. In the original, Carolina uses the expression “roupa de palm-beach,” which has been translated here as à la palm-beach in order to reflect her style.

5. When Carolina says that “at that time, only a politician made forty thousand réis” she probably means that only a politician made enough to casually spend forty thousand réis for a hat. Forty thousand réis would be much too little for his actual salary.
